When we think of the purest acts of love, we often imagine something as simple as a kiss. However, for one little boy, a kiss from a well-meaning friend or family member would lead to a devastating turn of events that would change his life forever.
This is the heartbreaking story of Juwan, a 16-month-old toddler from Namibia, whose life was turned upside down after an innocent kiss caused him to lose his vision and face a future full of uncertainty.
A Kiss Gone Wrong
It’s every parent’s worst nightmare: seeing your child suffer from something unexpected and out of your control. For Michelle Saaiman, the realization of this nightmare came in the form of an eye infection in her toddler. She initially thought it was just a common, harmless infection. But when antibiotics failed to improve his condition, a terrifying truth emerged.
Juwan had contracted the herpes simplex virus (HSV) in his eye—likely from someone with an active cold sore. This infection spread to his cornea, causing severe damage, and leaving the family in shock. Michelle couldn’t believe it.
“My first reaction was that the doctor was joking,” Michelle shared with Metro. “I thought it was an April Fool’s prank. But it wasn’t.”
The herpes infection, which most people associate with cold sores, had made its way to Juwan’s eye, and the damage was devastating.
The Tragic Damage: Why His Eye “Melted Away”
The herpes virus began to take a toll on Juwan’s eye in ways no one could have anticipated. As Michelle watched in horror, her son’s eye “melted away.” The cornea—usually a smooth and protective barrier—lost its natural lubrication, resulting in a 4mm hole in his eye. What followed was a frightening spiral of pain and uncertainty.
“The herpes caused so much damage that his brain stopped recognizing his eye,” Michelle explained. “It dried out and became completely numb to any sensation.”
Doctors feared that Juwan could lose his eye entirely.
Fighting for His Vision: A Long Road Ahead
Determined to save their son’s sight, Michelle and her husband took Juwan to Cape Town, South Africa, for specialized treatment. There, he underwent an amnion graft surgery in hopes of preserving his cornea. His eyelids were stitched together as a precaution to protect the eye during healing.
But the family’s journey doesn’t stop there. In April, Juwan will undergo another major surgery, where nerves from his leg will be transferred to his eye. If successful, it will pave the way for a cornea transplant in the future.
Despite all the pain and procedures, Michelle couldn’t be prouder of her little fighter.
“Juwan has been incredible,” she said. “Through everything, he still has a smile on his face, even when he’s in pain. It breaks my heart to see him go through this.”
A Parent’s Anguish: The Blame Game
At first, like many parents would, Michelle and her husband were devastated and angry at the person who unknowingly passed on the virus to their son.
“We were furious,” Michelle admitted. “Whoever kissed him on the face with an active cold sore—how could they not know the risks? Kisses are meant to show love, but in this case, it caused so much harm.”
However, despite their anger, Michelle quickly realized that the person responsible didn’t act maliciously. The kiss, likely given out of affection, had devastating consequences—but not intentional harm.
The Ongoing Battle: Raising Awareness
As Michelle navigates her son’s treatment, she has made it her mission to raise awareness about the dangers of spreading the herpes virus—especially to children. “I never imagined a cold sore could end up on someone’s cornea,” she said. “It’s a sobering reminder of how contagious this virus can be.”
Michelle took to Facebook to share her story in hopes of educating others. The post went viral, drawing attention to the fact that something as seemingly harmless as a kiss can cause irreversible harm.
To further support Juwan’s treatment, Michelle set up a fundraiser to help cover the costs of flights, specialized care, and medications.
“We’re doing everything we can to save his eye, but it’s been a long road,” Michelle said, grateful for any support the community can provide.
A Wake-Up Call for Parents Everywhere
While many of us know to avoid close contact with sick individuals, it’s easy to forget how serious these risks can be—especially for vulnerable children. The pandemic taught us to stay away from others when ill, but we still must stay vigilant when it comes to the silent dangers that can harm our kids.
Juwan’s story is a powerful reminder that seemingly small gestures, like a kiss, can have life-altering consequences. Let’s take this as an important lesson to be extra cautious—especially when it comes to the most vulnerable among us.
We’re sending love and strength to Juwan and his family as they continue this battle. Their journey is far from over, but their courage is inspiring. Let’s spread awareness and ensure that no other child has to face what Juwan has endured.
