You have to get used to
\nwalking more slowly,
\nsaying goodbye to who you were
\nand greeting who you have become.\n

It\u2019s hard to celebrate a birthday.
\nYou have to learn to accept your new face,
\nto walk proudly with your new body,
\nto let go of shame,
\nof prejudices and fears that come with age,
\nand let happen whatever will happen,
\nand let go of those who must leave,
\nand let stay those who wish to stay.\n

No, it\u2019s not easy to grow old.\n

You have to learn not to expect anything from anyone,
\nto walk alone, to wake up alone,
\nand not to recognize yourself every morning,
\nthe person you see in the mirror,
\nand accept that it\u2019s all over\u2014
\nlife as well,
\nand know how to say goodbye to those who leave
\nand remember those who have already gone,
\nand cry until you are emptied,
\nuntil you are dried up inside,
\nso that new smiles can grow,
\nnew hopes and new desires.\n
